Today I’m visiting with Eliza Knight, at History Undressed, with a guest post about “18th Century Pleasure Gardens”.
I’m talking about Vauxhall Gardens, the premier pleasure garden of the long 18th century and all its myriad attractions. I explore the cultural tensions the arose between the ascendant middle class and the upper classes in terms of taste and access to cultural pursuits. Oh, and I also talk about the garden’s dark walks, the preferred site for the naughty and the love lorn. 😉
It’s like school, only with much cooler pictures!
